SEA cRIO Modules
SEA cRIO Modules expand the National Instruments CompactRIO Platform by interfaces for
- wireless communication via GSM, UMTS, EDGE
- position determination by GPS
- communication with position sensors (EnDat) or
- bus systems (LIN bus).
These functions are integrated in several modules of the SEA cRIO module series. Some modules contain more than on of the functions. Detailed information can be found on our product pages and in our Shop.
Our cRIO modules are also available as single board version for embedded solutions.
3G
Module with wireless technology
Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, known as UMTS, is the mobile radio communications standard of the third generation (3G).
The 3G standard allows higher data transmission rates (up to 7.2 Mbit/s) than the 2G standard.
EnDat
In the industrial measurement rotation angles and distances are often acquired with incremental encoders. These encoders generate digital pulses per step and resolution ,e.g. TTL. To measure an angle or distance the number of pulses basing on a reference puls are counted. By analysing pulse number, puls frequence and phase, angle, speed and rotation can be determined.
The bidirection EnDat interface of Dr. Johannes Heidenhain GmbH offers a fast seiral data channel to transfer position information. The interface issuitable for digital drive sytems control cirquits with position determination which require high speed data transfer and high transfer safety.
GPS
The high sense GPS receiver in the Gxxx, GPS, and GPSIB modules allows the reception of the US GPS system for positioning and timing purposes. Reception of Galileo signals is prepared. The modules deliver worldwide position information and accurate time and time zone information.
Time and position can be retrieved within LabVIEW RT by provided API VIs. A PPS synch pulse as well as the main time information can be processed also within the cRIO FPGA for very accurate synchronization purposes.
GSM
The cRIO GSM modules are forseen to communicate with a remote CompactRIO system via a mobile communications network. The communication can be either SMS messages or direct communiction via TCP/IP with a stationary computer with access to the public internet. The communiucation can be done transparently via specific TCP/IP ports.
IRIG-B
The cRIO GPSIB module has an IRIG-B-sync output capability. IRIG-B defines the standards for a special time code format. IRIG standard (Inter Range Instrumentation Group) is issued by the US Department of Defence. IRIG defines the standard for the exchange of time data and has received several modifications and derivations which define different data rates and timing resolution.
The cRIO GPSIB delivers the signal as a DC level modulation, which is in fact a digital TTL signal. The module supports IRIG B standard. The hardware connection is an SMB-Connector on the front side of the module.

LIN
The cRIO LIN module supports the LIN bus communication standard LIN 1.x and LIN 2.x on two different IO ports. The module can act as a LIN master or slave node, but can also be used for monitoring LIN communication. The cRIO LIN modules can be configured directly by LDF files to define the bus master timing.
LIN telegrams can be time synchronized with FPGA counter to correlate data with other signals e.g. CAN bus signals.
WLAN
The cRIO WLAN module provides wireless functionality for the CompactRIO system. SEAs cRIO WLAN module bridges the CompactRIO controller into the wireless world according to IEEE 802.11 B/G standards. As there is no FPGA code necessary, the CompactRIO system can even programmed via Wi-Fi connection.
ZigBee
Module with wireless technology
ZigBee®is an open radio network standard, basing on IEEE 802.15.4. ZigBee enables to connect e.g. home appliance, sensors on short distances. ZigBee is a development of the ZigBee Alliance.
- frequency range: 868,3 MHz / 2,46 GHz (Europe), 915 MHz / 2,46 GHz (USA)
- transmitter power: 915 MHz / 246 GHz: type 0.5 mW to 10 mW (-3 dBm to 10 dBm), 868 MHz: max 25 mW (13.9 dBm)
- rangebetween 100 m and 20 km (depending on module type and country)
- transfer rate 10 kbit/s to 250 kbit/s.
